The Play Therapy Training Program
at SAGE

Play is the language of children.   History has shown us that an effective way to help children in counseling is through the use of play therapy.  Play Therapy is defined as

“The systemic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development”.

(APT, 2000).  Requests for services from clinicians who are trained in this modality have significantly increased over the past years.

With this in mind The Sage Graduate School offers Full and Half Day Play Therapy Workshops and Introduction to Play Therapy and Advanced Play Therapy Courses.  Students who combine these workshops and classes are able to obtain the 150 play therapy specific training hours required to become a Registered Play Therapist within a year.  These offerings can also be taken in different combinations that best fit a participant’s background, schedule and needs.

On April 25 and 26, 2008 the New York Association’s for Play Therapy annual conference will be held at the Albany Marriott.  Lawrence Rubin, Ph.D., RPT-S will give a two day training entitled “Harnessing the Healing Powers of Heroes and Superheroes in Play Therapy with Children, Teens and Adults”.

We are also pleased to announce that Brenda L. Bierdeman, Psy.D., CPT-P will be returning to SAGE in 2008.  On Friday, November 7, 2008 Dr. Bierdeman will present a full day workshop, from 9:00am- 4:30pm, entitled Hitchhiker's Guide to Planet Earth: Tools for Kids Who Don't Fit In.  This experiential workshop will provide the participant with tips and techniques for helping kids with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and PDD cope with the demands of living in the confusing and frustrating world of planet earth.
